Ethnography and culture

Megalithic sites, shepherds’ shelters, chapels, museums, Roncesvalles… Discover the cultural wealth of the Navarrese Pyrenees.

If you want to enjoy the culture and traditions of the Irati area, then you can discover the wealth of culture and heritage that the Navarrese Pyrenees have managed to conserve over the centuries from Hotel Rural Auñamendi. There are no great monuments, but there are dozens of small windows into the traditional way of life of these villages and valleys, such as:

Megalithic sites like the sites at Azpegi, Okabe, Ollate and Abodi, the remains of prehistoric settlements in the area.

Shepherds’ shelters scattered over the landscape, granaries (The Valley of Aezkoa has 15 of the 22 granaries still standing in Navarre) and drovers’ roads, such as the Salazar and Roncal roads, still in use today, are all signs of a deeply-rooted sheep-farming tradition in the area.

Chapels in outstanding natural settings, of which the nearby Chapel of Muskilda deserves special mention due to its great state of conservation. You can reach the chapel by road (4.5 km) or following a wonderful path.

Small thematic museums such as the ones on timber-rafting, cheese, Julián Gayarre or the House of Memory (in the Valley of Roncal), or permanent open-air exhibitions, like the Village of Traditional Occupations in Burgui.

Nature Interpretation Centres in Ochagavía-Otsagabia, Roncal and Lumbier.

The Orbaizeta arms factory, the Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles… and many more landmarks to discover if you travel around the area.
